The four eel species present in South Africa. To the untrained eye, they more or less look the same. Identification is based on skin pattern (plain or marbled) and position of dorsal fin. Top : Giant mottle eel, Anguilla marmorata. Bottom: (left) African mottled eel, A. bengalensis labiata, (middle) Longfin Eel, A. mossambica, (right) Shortfin Eel (A.bicolor bicolor)
